University of Texas Medical Branch - Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation

For over 130 years, University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has stood with Texas – training today's and tomorrow's health care workforce; working to better understand and treat illness and injury; providing care; and innovating new ways to improve health. With 1,000+ faculty in 50 departments serving 800 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate and professional students, UTMB Health is a $3B academic system comprising six hospitals, close to 100 outpatient clinics, and schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health, and Graduate Biomedical Sciences.

The Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation is responsible for the quality of the department's educational, scientific, and clinical programs, as well as for the overall leadership and management of the department. This includes the appropriate and optimal use of personnel, finance, space, and other resources to successfully fulfill the department's clinical, educational, and research missions. The Chair will be expected to optimize clinical operations and foster an atmosphere conducive to faculty development, education, clinical productivity, research, and the provision of outstanding clinical and surgical care. The Chair will apply a strong and proven commitment to high quality care delivery, research, education and advocacy.

Building upon the proud legacy of this storied department and institution, the Chair will embrace opportunities during this exciting and transformative time for all of health care, ensuring the department is fulfilling its commitment to leading the charge in the advancement of high-quality Orthopaedic care at UTMB and beyond. Working in a strong spirit of collaboration, the entire UTMB leadership team is demonstrating innovation, strong mission alignment, and unified ambition in achieving its goals under the leadership of the Dean.

The next Chair will be a forward-thinking leader, guiding the department through inevitable changes in the healthcare landscape. The Chair will possess the requisite emotional intelligence to promote a culture of collaboration, stewardship and transparency, including a commitment to improved business operations, and a willingness to re-align resources as strategies and needs evolve. UTMB is deeply committed to ensuring that its care delivery is recognized among the best in the nation, and that the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation is well positioned for its next leader to successfully build on its proud history.

Salary will be commensurate with Academic rank, qualifications, experience, and educational background. In addition, UTMB offers a superior benefits package, an excellent retirement program, a relocation allowance, as well as many other potential incentives.

UTMB Health encompasses four campuses with a total of six hospitals, and includes an extensive network of ninety-five primary, specialty, and urgent care clinics in sixty locations throughout a nine-county region in Southeast Texas, including Galveston, Brazoria, and Harris counties. UTMB is ranked seventy-nine by the NIH for medical institutions (FY23 Awards to All Institutions) with $180 million in total sponsored research expenditures.
