GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the accountant performs a variety of complex tasks in general areas of accounting, including recording transactions, financial and management reporting, maintenance of the chart of accounts, establishing new funds, analysis and reconciliation of the development and financial systems.
GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS: The Accountant is expected to provide financial expertise and to exercise initiative in interpreting policy on financial matters. Exercises administrative judgement and assumes responsibilities for decisions, consequences and results having an impact on people, costs and/or quality of service within the organization. The Accountant is accountable for fiscal compliance in accordance with GAAP as well as government accounting standards 2-CFR-200, Federal laws, regulations and administrative requirements. Is responsible for managing federal grant awards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:
1. Prepare and record journal entries according for month end close, and reconcile general ledger and subsidiary accounts.
2. Post revenue to AR.
3. Meet established deadlines for work completion
4. Maintain chart of accounts; create new funds and accounts as required or requested by management.
5. Prepare and distribute monthly and quarterly financial statements as assigned, management project expenditures reports and other special reports as required or requested by management.
6. Prepares grantor financial reports.
7. Assist MRS and other grant-writers in Budget preparation, budget updates, and budget forecasts.
8. Prepare client assistance items/documentation as assigned by the CFO.
9. Prepare desk instructions on all processes and procedures.
10. Attend meetings with MRS Director, MRS managers, and/or LT as assigned by the CFO.
11. Abide by agency policies and procedures.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of and ability to apply Not-for-profit accounting in accordance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, OMB Circulars A-133, A-110 and A-122.
• Thorough knowledge of automated accounting systems and software expertise with Microsoft Office products.
• The ability to analyze report data, and draw conclusions.
• Must take initiative, be accurate with figures, be well-organized, exercise sound judgment in decision making, and maintain confidentiality.
• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with grantor agencies, subcontractors, vendors, and co-workers.
• Must be able to respond appropriately to deadlines, work effectively as an individual and as a member of a team.
• Communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a combination of education and experience is preferred. 3-5 years administrative and accounting experience is required. Experience managing federal funding and non-profit accounting experience preferred.
